Senior MQM leaders Dr Farooq Sattar and Khawaja Izhar ul Hassan were arrested on Monday night as they came to address the media at Karachi press club.
Dr Farooq Sattar insisted on presenting his stance before the media but he was denied and whisked away by Rangers. “I am also a Pakistani. I shall present my stance,” Dr Sattar told the Rangers.
He, however, wasn’t allowed to speak to the media.
The MQM leader was told that DG Rangers Maj-Gen Bilawal Akbar wanted to see him. Khawaja Izhar, who is the Leader of the Opposition in Sindh Assembly, was also detained by the paramilitary force.
The arrests came a few hours after some angry MQM workers stormed the office of ARY News and assaulted media teams and clashed with the police. One unidentified man was killed and seven others injured including SAMAA’s cameraman, according to hospital officials. Demonstrators also tried to burn SAMAA’s DSNG.
“One was brought (to the hospital) dead, who was shot with a gun,” Dr Seemi Jamali, the director at Jinnah Hospital Hospital said.
