Pakistan remained third in the world Test rankings after beating England in their fourth Test at the Oval on Sunday.
However, following this win, Pakistan could rise to number one if results in Sri Lanka and the West Indies go their way.
Sunday’s result scuppered England’s immediate hopes of climbing to the top of the standings.
“Pakistan at no 3 in Test rankings. If Sri Lanka beat Aus by 2-0 or 3-0 and if India beat WIndies by 2-0 or 2-1 then Pak will be number ONE,” ICC Live Scores wrote on its Twitter account.
Earlier, Pakistan beat England by 10 wickets to win the fourth Test at The Oval as they ended the four-match series all square at 2-2.
Chasing just 40 to win, Pakistan won when Azhar Ali (30 not out) hit off-spinner Moeen Ali for six.
Sami Aslam was 12 not out in a victory that coincided with Pakistan’s national Independence Day.
England were dismissed for 253 in their second innings on Sunday’s fourth day.
Leg-spinner Yasir Shah took five for 71 after Younis Khan (218) and Asad Shafiq (109) made excellent centuries in Pakistan’s first innings 542 all out.
